Medication Chart Dispensing
Medication Chart Dispensing allows pharmacies to dispense medications for residential aged care facility (RACF) patients using a national residential medication chart (NRMC), in place of separate prescriptions. Certain medications will still require a separate written prescription in addition to an order on a medication chart.
For more information on the NRMC, see the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care website.
In order to dispense a Medication Chart (MedChart) prescription to a patient:
- The patient must be in a Dose Administration Aids facility
- The facility must have a RACF ID (this can be added by going to Dose Administration Aids)
Dispense a Medication Chart Prescription
1. Begin dispensing as usual by selecting a patient
2. Press [F9] and select Yes to switch on MedChart Mode

Note: If the patient does not have a current Medication Chart set up, Dispense Works will prompt you to add Patient Medication Chart Details

Note: The End Date of a Medication Chart is Read Only and will be automatically calculated based on the entered Start Date. The duration of the NRMC is a maximum of four months. The End Date of a Medication Chart is the end of the third calendar month following the Start Date of the Medication Chart. For example, if the start date of the chart is 19 January, the chart end date is 30 April - calculated as the remainder of January with an additional 3 months.
3. When MedChart Mode is enabled, the Chart Type, and Chart Start Date and End Date will be displayed next to Prescribed Date in the Prescription Adorner

4. Continue dispensing as normal and search for a medication. Certain medications will still require a separate written prescription in addition to an order on a medication chart. If the selected medication is not available for Medication Chart dispensing, an alert will be displayed when the PBS code is selected:

If the medication being dispensed requires an Authority Number, Dispense Works will automatically populate the field with the required information:

If the item to be dispensed via a Medication Chart is to be ceased or is required only for a limited duration (e.g. antibiotics), then an End Date and Dosages Per Day will need to be entered in order to determine the quantity to be dispensed:

5. MedChart Mode will remain on for the patient until it is switched off. This can be done by pressing [F9] and selecting Yes to switch off MedChart Mode or by pressing [F12], returning to the Home Screen

When prescriptions have been dispensed via MedChart Mode, the Supply Type in Medication History [F2] will show Medication Chart.
