Email Delivery Overview
When emails don’t reach their destination, it’s usually for one of these reasons:
1. Rejected
The recipient's mail server has refused to accept your email. Common reasons include:
- The recipient's email address doesn’t exist.
- Your email address or domain is blocked by the recipient.
- The email content triggered a rejection policy (e.g., flagged as inappropriate).
2. Hard Bounce
A permanent delivery failure. Reasons include:
- The recipient's email address is invalid or doesn’t exist.
- The recipient’s domain no longer exists.
- There’s a misconfiguration on the recipient’s email server.
What to do: Verify the email address for typos or errors. Remove invalid addresses from your mailing list.
3. Soft Bounce
A temporary delivery failure. Reasons include:
- The recipient’s inbox is full.
- The recipient's mail server is down or temporarily unavailable.
- Your email is too large for the recipient’s server to handle.
What to do: These emails may be delivered if retried later. Monitor for repeated failures.
4. Spam
Your email was flagged as spam by the recipient’s server or spam filter. Reasons include:
- The email content looks suspicious (e.g., excessive links, triggering keywords).
- Marked as Spam by Recipient
