Develop and implement a dispensing procedure that ensures the safety and quality of the activity.
The procedure for dispensing that includes or refers to
- Accepting prescriptions
- Processing the prescription
- Labelling prescription items
- Checking the prescription
- Storage of dispensed medicines prior to collection
- Counselling and hand over of prescription item(s)
- Provision of Consumer Medicines Information (CMI)
- Use of Real Time Prescription Monitoring system for Schedule 8 medicines*
Observation that the procedure is followed.
Note: both hard copy and electronic prescriptions will need to be considered in the development of the procedure.
Pharmacy’s will need to decide if they have separate procedure for electronic prescription or if combined.
*Check your state for schedule 8 recording requirements
